Dehua · Blanc de Chine
White is never just one colour; light gives the glaze its temperature
Ivory, milk white and cool grey shadows form a soft hierarchy, allowing form and shallow relief to lead.
01The story
Dehua is known for white porcelain. It produced blue-and-white and shadow-blue wares in the Song and Yuan periods, then became especially associated with white porcelain in the Ming. The body and glaze read almost as one, with a smooth, luminous finish; figures, censers, zuns and ewers preserve a rich modelling tradition. Traditional names include ivory white and lard white, while European collecting and research contexts also use “Blanc de Chine”. This theme treats white not as a single pure value, but as three warm and cool layers created by direct light, glaze reflection and shadow.
02Where the colours come from
The ground is the warm ivory of porcelain body, the panel a milk-white turn in the glaze, and body text a warm deep ink. Instead of a saturated gold, the accent is an old brown-gold drawn from glaze shadow, preserving the quiet whole. Public Palace Museum and National Museum resources establish Dehua’s forms, traditional names and exhibition context. The original vessel and relief in the plate correspond to no specific collection object.
03How the palette was built
The composition avoids placing a pure-white object against a pure-white ground; warm off-whites are separated by value and a slight temperature shift. Links and buttons use the warmer body brown and keep a clear outline on the pale ground. The syntax palette combines warm ink, body brown, limestone blue and old gold, preserving the white-porcelain mood while keeping keywords, strings and comments distinct.
